Abstract
This article intends to demonstrate the way in which the writer Aluísio Azevedo used the grotesque as esthetic category to write the novel The Owl.
To this end, we will support us on the following texts: The Grotesque and the Sublime (Victor Hugo), and The Grotesque (Wolfgang Kayser). Another important study to advance the discussion is Rabelais and his World (Mikhail Bakhtin).
