... the Campus biodiversity introduces itself
Delighted to make your acquaintance! We are just a sample of the species that you will find in the Campus of FCT. The Campus biodiversity has been growing sharply, so that it would not be possible to fit all species in this thin booklet, that we hope, will trigger your curiosity. Still, all of us will be included in the digital version of FCTVIVA, together with some more complete information
We, the lucky species casting on paper, are not the prettiest ones, since as recognized by Alberto Caeiro, “Beauty is the name of some thing which does not exist / That I give to
things in exchange for the gratification that they give me...”. Neither were we selected due
to our abundance or importance, because in the food webs that we integrate all species
fulfil essential roles. Considering our geographical origin, some of us are native from the Mediterranean region, while others travelled from the four corners of the world, thus truly embodying the spirit of a University Campus. Regarding our ancestry on Earth, the common- pill woodlouse claims the oldest lineage, with 500 Ma, followed by the lichens and by some insects, whose ascendants appeared about 400 Ma ago. In perspective, it might be concluded that your human species has so far, existed during about 6 thousandths of the time spent by many of us on Earth. How were we then selected? We believe it was just the luck of the draw, since a sample of species that make up the Campus communities was needed.
In order to prevent species from pledging their own cause, we asked two of our followers, among the many thousands of visitors to the Campus, to present us in this publication.
The result was not perfect, since protests were already heard - the house-mouse complained about unfair treatment, by comparison with the praised common wall gecko, while the cane demanded compliments levelled with those payed to the European fan palm. Still, we would feel lavishly rewarded should this visiting card contribute to colour some of your leisure breaks.
