Faits Divers: Notes on a recurrent figure in contemporary Lebanese art

Research output: Non-textual formDigital or Visual Products

Abstract

Many Lebanese art projects seize on anecdotes, rumours or curious events related by the media, evoking thereby implicitly the notion of fait divers. According to Jacques Rancière, this notion captures the visual and textual representation of an “intersection of rationalities”. This is what makes it fruitful in relation to the complex political and social reality of Lebanon. My article aims to show how different artworks of the Saradar Collection (such as those of Walid Raad, Ali Cherri and Nada Sehnaoui) can be approached through the lens of the fait divers and the logic it unfolds
