Abstract

In the Algarve region (southern Portugal) there are several plants species, which contribute for significant amount of residual biomass resulting from forest management, with contain substantial quantities of essential oils of high value. These oils can be extracted from these biomasses before their energy recovery in order to increase the value chain. In this study, the evaluation of extraction yields and the composition of the essential oils extracted from branches of Pinus pinaster and Eucalyptus globulus and shoots of Cistus ladanifer and Lavandula sp. was performed using steam distillation. The aqueous phase, also called hydrolat obtained after steam distillation, was also analyzed. Essential oils and hydrolats are both value-added products that may represent a new source of income for forest land owners.
