Abstract

Progressive collapse of multistory buildings can occur after local damage of a structural member. Typically the latter is initiated by an extreme unforeseen event, such as an earthquake in non-seismic areas, different types of natural disasters, man-caused accidents, and terrorist attacks. The study described in this paper aimed at experimentally testing the effectiveness of masonry infills on the behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) frames subjected to a single column failure. The results obtained show that infill walls can significantly increase the load carrying capacity of RC frames and thus serve as an important robustness reserve in the case of unpredictable extreme events.
