Abstract
This contribution studies a series of performance events that took place from 1718 to 1728 in the circle of the Ambassador of Portugal to the Holy See, André de Melo e Castro. The period considered allows to examine the evidence left in the archives by these performances both from a synchronic perspective as a series of micro-events related to one another, and from a diachronic perspective through the succession of multiple performance events. Through the analysis of this evidence for musical, theatrical, and choreographic performance, the study reflects on the social and political context for these performances, considering their similarities to and differences from the cultural practices of the Roman aristocracy. The contribution begins with a more general analysis of the bigger picture, but then focuses in particular on performance events (cantatas, pastorals, commedie all’improvviso, balls, etc.) that took place at Palazzo Cesarini, the residence of the aristocratic Ambassador in the service of King John V of Portugal.
