Abstract

The nepheline syenite of Monchique (Portugal) is a well know n Portuguese Dimension Stone. This work presents the potential of this rock to the ceramic industry.
Due to its high alumina and alkalis content, nephelinesyenite can be used as a feldspar substitute.Today, isolated feldspars are the minerals used in the ceramic industry. Alumina is used as a stabilizer, promoting the durability of the materials by increasing the resistance and alkalis content works as fluxing agent, reducing burning temperature.
