Abstract

With a4f6 electronic configuration,europiumionsinthetrivalentchargestateareknowntobeefficientactivatorsinwidebandgapmatrices.Embeddedinthealuminophosphate(Li2O-BaO-Al2O3-La2O3-P2O5) glassestheopticallyactivatedEu3þ ions leadtointenseroomtemperatureorange/redlumines-cence with16-23 Cd/m2 by usingultravioletpumping.Theas-preparedandheattreatedeuropiumdoped glassesfortemperaturesbelowandabove Tg werestudiedbyroomtemperatureRamanspectroscopy,absorption,photoluminescenceexcitation,temperaturedependentandtimedependentphotoluminescence.Whenthesamplesareexcitedby325nmwavelengthphotons,anenhancementofthe redluminescenceintensitybyca.oneorderofmagnitudewasfoundtooccurfortemperaturesbetween 14Kand350K,forallthedopedglasses.Ontheotherhand,byusingresonantexcitationonthe5L6 Eu3þ excitedstate(λexc390 nm)theionemissionintensitywasfoundtobenearlyconstantfortemperaturesupto500K.Forhighertemperaturesasteeperdecreaseoftheluminescenceintensityoccurs duetonon-radiativecompetitivechannelsdescribedbyactivationenergiesofca.235meVand450 meVbyusing325and390nmwavelengthphotonsasexcitation,respectively.Thelifetimeofthe 5D0level intheseglassesisca.2.93ms.Adiscussionofthethermalpopulationandde-excitationmechanisms isperformed.
