Abstract
The Insurance Distribution Directive (IDD) purports to level the playing field between the various types of insurance distributors in the European Union (EU) and its implementation has proven to be successful. However, in some cases it has fallen short of its main promises as some gaps have been identified, most particularly in the regulation of disruptive business models and the prevention of regulatory competition. This entry provides an overview of the IDD’s main provisions and their underlying policy concerns, setting them in the wider context of the EU single market. This entry also takes into consideration the main successes and shortcomings identified since the IDD’s entry into force, focusing on its contributions to customer protection and cross-border trade within the EU, thereby enhancing the understanding of the existent connection between the legal and regulatory framework and the consolidation of the single market for insurance distribution.
