Abstract
There is a huge interest in a better way to grasp social and cultural phenomena through online social networks like Facebook. Despite technological advances and a bunch of computational tools, there is no evidence that digital methods (Rogers, 2013), for instance, are being used for Facebook’s studies in Portugal. The degree of uncertainty about this issue led to the proposal of a systematic review (Petticrew; Roberts, 2006; Kitchenham, 2007) of the methods that have been applied to study Facebook by Portuguese researchers in the last three years. It was then made a selection among prestigious universities, conferences and journals in Portugal. The aim of this review was to have a scientific background in order to promote new research practices into the communication science field. This paper is divided into three parts: i) first a brief introduction of new methods to grasp social media; ii) after that the parameters adopted in the review are especified; iii) and finally, some findings are presented to reveal the main methods used in Portugal to study Facebook.
