Abstract
Apresenta‑se o resultado do estudo de conjunto, constituído por duzentas e trinta e oito estelas medievais, provenientes do Distrito de Beja, também conhecidas por estelas discóides e estelas rectangulares ou bem como cabeceiras de sepultura. A quando do início deste trabalho, conheciam‑se setenta e uma estelas publicadas, correspondendo a 30% do conjunto agora estudado, ou seja, mais cento e sessenta e nove monumentos inéditos, correspondendo a 70% do conjunto. Foi elaborado catálogo de todos os exemplares até agora descobertos, na região mencionada, procedeu‑se ao seu enquadramento histórico‑arqueológico e estudaram‑se os diferentes aspectos que aqueles monólitos proporcionam, o seu suporte e forma, mas nomeadamente a diversa simbologia que patenteiam. Nesta destaca‑se iconografia relacionada com práticas religiosas, mas também actividades económicas e militares.
This is the result of the study of two hundred and thirty‑eight medieval Stelae found in the District of Beja. These Stelae are also known as Discoid Stelae, Rectangular Stelae or Gravestones. In the beginning of this paper, were published seventy one stelae, corresponding to 30 % of the set now in study. The others 70% are totally unknown and are presented in this work for the first time. A catalogue of all the Stelae found in this district, until now, has been made, as well as its historical‑archaeological frame of reference. The different aspects of these monolithic stones have been studied, namely the diverse symbolism shown. We can point out the iconography of religious practices, but also economic and military activities.
