Abstract

Environmental studies refer to a wide field of research where the interactions between humans and nature are studied and assessed. In this entry, the focus is on the subfield which, within environmental studies, deals explicitly with ethical issues, namely environmental ethics. This entry starts with a general overview of the field and proceeds to discuss the many dimensions of justice and the various understandings of the “value of nature” relevant to the field. The dimensions of justice include questions of social justice and intergenerational justice, while the value debates centre on the intrinsic vs. instrumental value of nature and range from anthropocentric to ecocentric viewpoints. The entry concludes with a review of ecological crises and sustainable future as examples of practical issues in environmental studies.
