Abstract
This paper explores the institutional framework guiding community-based
natural resource management in northeast Portugal. It challenges the effectiveness of depending solely on state control or privatisation for sustainable
natural resource use, emphasising the limitations of these approaches. To
assess the historical influence of communal practices on Trás-os-Montes’ socio-economic structures, we examine their impact on resource control, transfer
