Abstract
Religious Festivals was one of the most visible forms of rule in the Early Modern Age, where spiritual and cultural power could be displayed hand to hand. Jubilees for the beatification and canonization were, among the vast array of Church ceremonial, particularly good occasions to showcase such display
of power; as exemplified in the festivities for the beatification of Ignatius of Loyola (1491-1556) promoted by the Jesuits in the Azorean islands of Terceira and São Miguel. Besides Art History, our analysis also focuses on the engagement of the various participants, ranging from the Jesuits themselves to the authorities, namely the governor, the captain-major, the
sergeants, and other local officials. Lastly, our research studies the diversity of participants and their impact in the festivities, whose mobilization and participation were, at the time, a greater good.
