Abstract
A monarquia constitucional provocou inúmeras alterações à Casa Real Portuguesa.
The constitutional monarchy brought about numerous changes to the Portuguese Royal Household. It limited the monarch's power, separated the public treasury from the royal finances and endowed him and the remaining members of the royal family with a civil list. The civil war between absolutists and constitutionalists and the consequent victory of the latter led to the former's downfall, both in public administration and in the Royal Household itself. It was Pedro IV of Portugal, as regent of his daughter, who began the process of forming this new house, imprinting his personal stamp. In addition to simplifying the categories of officers, there was also a reduction in their number, options which were validated by Queen Maria II. However, the recruitment process was not limited, as before, to the tradition of service to the Royal Household and the sharing of the royal favour.
