Abstract
Ethernet’s rise from Local Area Networks (LANs) to MAN/WAN networks has sprouted several scalability and forwarding problems, due to the inadequacy of legacy mecha- nisms at the considered scale. In this paper we list some of the proposed approaches that attempt to improve forwarding on such settings, present a simulation study that compares several new load-balancing forwarding schemes with shortest-path bridging and develop a problem statement that highlights the difficulties that may arise when developing enhanced Ethernet forwarding algorithms.
