Abstract
This article aims to find continuities and changes in the image of the world, over time, taking as its starting point the one that the encyclopedic medieval texts and cartography show, passing through utopias, but not neglecting to mention or quote some other sources: textual, iconic, sound (charts and maps, mariner’s and travel books, novels and lyrics). It seeks to demonstrate how some spaces (island, city) will be organized in a mapping that repaints the world or and the mapping itself, over time, according to a viewpoint or an observation site. Essentially, it is important here to realize how the image of the world conveys the Imaginary, or the opposite, and is modified by Imaginary, allowing understanding how real or imagined strands interact, to fill the gaps between science and imagination.
