Abstract
It is a commonplace fact that interpretation – whatever its nature – involves selection. We all also know that such selection frequently entails controversy. In the case of music, both the selection and the controversy are seminal, since the work does not exist without a performative act. This ‘existence’ also implies a public. Obviously, controversy nourishes many of the theories that have always been espoused by the most diverse of musical theorists. This, in itself, is an important justification for the thinking and writing about musical practice. This paper aims to clarify the various groups that give a singular unity to this singular work, supported by the copious available musicological literature on this topic.
