Electoral Turnout

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of electoral turnout in Portugal since the transition to democracy in 1974/1975 until early 2021. Firstly, it presents the evolution of official and population-adjusted participation rates in different types of elections. Secondly, it reviews the main findings in the literature regarding the sources of variation in voter participation, surveying factors both on a contextual and individual level. This literature review shows that in recent decades there has been an increase of turnout asymmetries. Finally, using aggregate data, the chapter provides an original analysis of the extent to which electoral outcomes in parliamentary elections may vary as a function of turnout levels.
