Abstract

Proper management of pig slurry is a necessary pathway that needs to be prioritized. Anaerobic digestion can be a key process to improve this management. Working with real slurry samples at laboratory-scale represents a challenge to recreate the full-scale conditions and to ensure the representativeness of the substrates to be used. Sampling collection for experimental trials includes a storage time within which the samples may be self-biodegraded. This work intends to evaluate the effect of the storage time in the samples’ physicochemical characteristics. Fresh slurry was collected and divided into 2 samples: A (raw) and B (sieved). Samples were stored at three distinct conditions: room temperature (15-20 ⁰C), 4 ⁰C and −18 ⁰C. Characterizations of the samples were performed weekly, biweekly, or monthly, during a 56-day period. Storage conditions and pre-treatment indeed affect the physicochemical characteristics of pig slurry, with storage at 4 ⁰C keeping samples most stable over time.
