Durability and stability study of debitus grisailles

Abstract

During the restoration of stained-glass windows, to fill the grisailles losses is frequently used commercial Debitus grisailles. This article presents the study of durability and stability of five of these grisailles. Different alteration tests were carried out, samples were placed in high humidity chambers (80% and 95% RH) for 30 months and were submerged into distilled water for 3 months. The samples and degradation products were characterized by optical microscopy, μ-Raman spectroscopy and colorimetry. The pH of the water was measured during the experiment and the dissolved elements were analysed by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission. It was showed an alteration on the grisaille’s colour and the formation of degradation products, that were identified as sulphates. Despite these alterations, these commercial grisailles presented a good durability and stability to be used in restoration works.
