Abstract
This article concerns a letter sent by a Cape Verde bishop to the king of Portugal. The subject matter of this letter was both to condemn the slave trade and to propose the liberation of slaves whenever they were christened. The document has been attributed to the Bishop Pedro Brand.o, who lived in Cape Verde during the last years of the sixteenth century. This article proposes Bishop Louren.o Garro as the letter’s real author, who probably wrote it in the 1640s. The article also integrates the letter into the Portuguese and Spanish anti-slave trade literatures of those centuries.
