Doenças da cabeça, doenças do coração na Arquipatologia de Filipe Montalto

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

The Archipathology (1614) by Filipe Montalto is a relevant work within the history of the psychiatry. Keeping faithful to the hippocratico-galenic tradition, Montalto reformulates the anthropological framework on which is based the approach to the mental illness, trough the view of the psychosomatic whole as an integrative unity of interdependent systems. So, the cause of mental illness lies in the brain, which contaminates the heart, due the sympathy between these organs, generating a mental alienation and an emotional deregulation. On the contrary, the healthy state consists of the reciprocal adjustment between brain and heart, reason and emotion.
