Abstract
In the present study on civil and religious festivals in Setúbal in the Early Modern Period, the manuscripts of João Almeida Carvalho (1817-1897) held by the Setúbal District Archives, as well as the printed version of some of these in the edition entitled Acontecimentos, Lendas e Tradições da Região Setubalense, play a unique part in their historiography. Hence, the reflections presented herein depart from previous sources and are crossed with others, not referred to by this author, allowing us to build a new perspective of Setúbal in the Early Modern Period. This new picture shows a more festive and ornate space in which manifestations of esteem for the Church and the Crown gave rise to the development of stronger socialisa- tion and the creation of ephemeral spectacles filled with colour, light and music.
