Abstract
The illuminated initials play a relevant role in structuring and organizing the text of medieval manuscripts, as it is commonly known nowadays. In what concerns the Vocabularium of Papias, it seems that the author prescribed a system of graphic differentiation for the alphabetical ordering of the work. Is this system visible in the alc. 424‑426? This paper aims to answer this question and reflect on the illuminated initials as structuring elements, underlining their decisive part in the consultation and memorization processes. Such study raised, however, a much broader question: is it possible to recognize to these and other graphical forms not only a didactic, but also a mnemonic function? The paper also goes through some visual devices, namely the aristotelian qualitas and quantitas diagrams as well as the loquela digitorum of Hrabanus Maurus, in order to comment on their function as memory stimulus tools.
