Abstract

This text introduces different sides of the same reality, the research, teaching and disclosure of the History of Classical and Late Antique Art (8th century BCE- 8th century CE) in general and in Portugal. The goal is to update state of the art clarifying concepts such as Classical and Late Antiquity, explaining conventions such as chronologies, pondering historical and geographical notions such as the Mediterranean, all the while assessing the cultural and artistic impact of the Greco-Roman heritage ultimately preparing the birth of Europe. This text focuses on the tireless eye of Art History upon the object of art. We advocate interdisciplinary work, aesthetic discussion, creative attitude. Finally, we wish to introduce the dynamics of the History of Classical and Late Antique Art (1st to 8th centuries CE) research in Western Hispania, more precisely in the Roman province of Lusitania whose territory largely corresponds to what Portugal is today.
