DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES IN ENGINEERING EDUCATION ACCORDING TO THE MISSION - THE BALANCE BETWEEN ANALYSIS AND SYNTHESIS

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

Several authors have found important challenges to ensure a sustainable European higher education, namely the changes required in education and research as a means to focus on innovation, the emergence of new higher education regions in the world (e.g. China and India), the dilemma cooperation vs. competition, and the shift from the information to the conceptual age. These challenges must be seen under different perspectives, according to the mission of each education institution and the geopolitical context. This paper offers a reflection about the balance between synthesis and analysis that should be adopted to define the functional requirements of a sustainable educational approach. We start presenting the high level functions that an engineering course should fulfil. Using these functions, one could develop a reflection about the balance between synthesis and analysis using the Axiomatic Design Theory. The application of Axiomatic Design allows describing the framework of a multiplicity of engineering education programmes, taking into account its societal purpose and making clear the role of the analysis and the synthesis. Finally, this classification is applied to the Portuguese higher education system, which consist of the University and the Polytechnic subsystems, emphasizing what should be the characteristics of each one of them.
