Design of a high brightness solar-pumped laser by light-guides

Abstract

To improvesolar-pumpedlaseroutputperformance,acompactfusedsilicalight-guideassemblyis combinedwitha2V-shapedcavitytoachieveuniformpumpingalongaNd:YAGrod.Basedonboth refractiveandtotalinternalreflectionprinciples,thelight-guideassemblyprovidesaneffective approachinbothguidingandredistributingthehighlyconcentratedsolarradiation.AnearGaussian profilefocalspotofa1.5mdiameterparabolicmirroristransformedintoanintenserectangularlight column,uniformlydistributedalongthe2D-CPCoutputendoftheassembly,avoidingthegenerationof hot pumpspotswithinthelaserrod.Bytrappingthepumplightwithinthe2V-shapedcavity,efficient multi-passabsorptionisachieved.Optimumpumpingparametersandsolarlaseroutputpowersare foundthroughZEMAX& non-sequentialray-tracingandLASCAD& lasercavityanalysis.Thesolarlaser outputperformancesofbothsingle-crystalandcore-dopedNd:YAGrodsarecompared.Laserbeam brightnessfigureofmerit B¼9.0101W iscalculated,whichis310%morethanthemostrecent record.About16.4W/m2 collectionefficiencyisalsonumericallypredicted.
