Abstract
This study intends to trace the history of drawing, as a discipline and as a practice, on the island of São Miguel in the second half of the 19th century. Embodied as an element of 19th century education and instruction, drawing gained civilizational importance in the 19th century, associating itself with the project of regeneration of the country and national aggrandizement, which involved the development of “industrial art”. In this context, this study traces the path of drawing in terms of the various forms of its teaching (high school, industrial, private and associative) and the different ways of its public dissemination on the island (advertising, illustration and caricature). Of note are the various institutions and associations that made its teaching possible, such as the Liceu Nacional de Ponta Delgada and the Escola de Desenho Industrial Gonçalo Velho Cabral, as well as several associations and individuals who taught and practiced drawing as part of their professional, social and cultural activity. We highlight men and women who learned drawing, made it their profession and contributed, through print and the press, to make it a daily presence on the island, similar to what happened at national and European level. This study therefore aims to contribute to the knowledge of the Social and Cultural History of the Azores, approaching one of the most important artistic and cultural elements of the 19th century
