Depictions of Military Music in Portuguese Ceramic Tiles

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

It is the aim of this work to study music in military context depicted in Portuguese ceramic tiles. Tiles are one of the most popular and important sources in Portuguese artistic millieu. The Portuguese tile corpus is wide and a huge number of panels are still in situ. It is the case of Sala das Batalhas from Fronteira Palace, produced in the late 17th century. Other tile panels are analyzed, dated from the 18th century. For all examples, organological aspects will be considered. Also a comparison between sources and military practices will be made, using secondary literature, such as military books, by one hand. By the other hand, it will be shown that copies from engravings were a regular practice among tile painters.
