Abstract
The most complete musical source known from the opera Ezio, by David Perez, premiered in 1751 at the Teatro Regio Ducal in Milan, is kept in the Calahorra Cathedral Archive. Bearing in mind that no complete version of this work has been found so far, this constitutes a collection of special im- portance and a distinctive example in comparison with other sources with music by Perez or with arias from Italian opera in general that circulated in Spain. Consisting of an overture, 20 arias and a duet, the score raises several questions that cross international and local perspectives. These concern both other manifestations of the work, present in various countries and cities, and the broader context of the circulation of Italian music found in Spanish ecclesiastical archives. The volume kept in Calahorra’s cathedral serves as a starting point for different approaches and queries, including a balance on sources of different nature of this opera by David Perez, for a preliminary view on the dissemination of his music and for a reflection on the uses and functions that Italian opera arias, by Perez and other composers, could have had in the orbit of religious institutions, both in terms of performance prac- tices and the pedagogical potential in the training of musicians.
