Abstract
Today, as in the past, cities contribute to the affirmation of the regions in which they operate and are fundamental to the sustainable development of societies. With this text we seek to contribute to the analysis of the main urban transformations in the city of Covilã, located in the Beira Interior region of Portugal. We start from a historical reading of the city where we mark its constituion as a dynamic mono-funcional wool center until contemporary times, when the industrial model that had structured it faces adverse circunstances leading to its profound exhaustion. Next, the development of higher education in Covilhã is discussed, which seems to be due to the inverse reason of the crisis of the industrial city, a theme that we will explore around the urban role of the local University from the way it is representing by the inhabitants, and considering the resulting social, economic, environmental and cultural implications.
