Abstract
Portuguese presence in the Middle East was carried out between the beginning of the 16th and the mid-17th centuries. Its heritage trace can be mostly tracked by military architectural evidences, spread over current Iran, UAE, Oman and Bahrain. Muscat (1507-1650) was the biggest structure among all Portuguese fortresses due to its exceptional harbour conditions. A defensive plan was developed based on São João (Al Jalali) and Almirante (Al-Mirani) forts, connected within an interdependent scheme. Crossing cartography with local surveys and morphological analysis, this paper wishes to interpret all the different military structures in relation to the territorial characteristics of this point of the Omani coast.
