Abstract

The Hispanic Monarchy launched several strategies aimed to exercise a supervisory role over foreign consuls settled in their ports during XVII and XVIII centuries. The pretension of this control was carried out not only over the consular activities and functions but also over their appointments. The aim of the present work is to study the role played by the consular institution in the regulation and the fluctuations of the international relationships in the European context. It is intended to highlight the importance of these kind of institutions as observatories for political and economical history during the Early Modern period.
