Da Reconquista e da Cruzada na fronteira portuguesa

O discurso da Reconquista nunca teve em Portugal a importância política e ideológica, nem a repercussão historiográfica que conheceu em Espanha. Nos séculos XIX e XX, não foi nos tempos fundacionais do reino que se procurou o carácter da Nação, mas nos episódios e nas personagens da gesta da expansão marítima e dos Descobrimentos. Para os letrados medievais, a Cruzada parecia mais apelativa e a Reconquista só adquiriu relevância na obra historiográfica do conde de Barcelos,que subverteu a lógica da restauração dinástica e fez dos fidalgos os autênticos herdeiros dos antigos godos. Voltaria a ganhar importância muito depois, quando aqueles ideais foram valorizados pelos meios católicos e conservadores como arma de combate político contra os valores da ideologia liberal e republicana.

The discourse of the Reconquest never had in Portugal the political and ideological importance, nor the historiographic repercussion that it knew in Spain.In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, it was not in the founding times ofthe kingdom that the character of the nation was sought, but in the episodes and characters of the maritime gesta and the Discoveries. For medieval literates of thekingdom, the Crusade’s speech seemed more appealing and the reconquest wouldonly gained relevance in the historiographical work of the count of Barcelos, whosubverted the logic of dynastic restoration and made the noblemen the true heirs ofthe old Goths. It would also regain some importance many centuries later, when theideals of the crusade and the reconquest were reused by Catholic and conservative groups as a tool for political combat against the values of liberal and republican ideology.
