Abstract

The morbidity associated with work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSDs) leads to high productivity losses (namely presenteeism) in health care organizations, which induces a substantive impact (cost). Health professionals that mobilize patients, have high rates of accidents with WRMSDs. The present study aimed to evaluate the impact (cost) of WRMSDs for accidents at nurses and operational attendants in a Portuguese small hospital. Starting from the identification of workplace accidents (WA) occurring in these occupational groups between 2009 and 2013, that resulted from musculoskeletal injury, registered participants responded to a questionnaire with WQL-8 and SPS-6 scales to determine the levels of presenteeism. This study adopted the methodology of human capital to estimate the indirect costs of lost productivity for WRMSDs. It was found that the transfers are a major cause of WRMSDs, with most prevalent symptoms in the lumbar region. There is loss of productivity at this institution from WA with WRMSDs that originates presenteeism, between 2009 and 2013, with an estimated cost of 32.158,86(sic).
