Abstract
The results of the survey work and archaeological excavation, which were carried out in 1996, are presented. Archaeological housing structures that were unknown until then were discovered and the building system was identified. Although the wall that incorporates the façade of today’s Chapel of St. John the Baptist (known as Cuba) may have belonged to a previous construction, the body that forms the cube belongs most probably to the sixteenth century. Similar hermitages were constructed in rural Alentejo in the same period. This work also allowed the identification of existing wall paintings in the archaeological structures excavated and inside the Chapel, referred by TulioEspanca. It was possible to trace the origin and evolution of “Cuba” in order to contribute to the knowledge of another fundamental piece of the history of Monsaraz.
