Abstract
The tobacco industry in Portugal was organized as a monopoly due to its high tax potential. This led to the creation of strict rules that kept the Azores out of the production and out of the direct trade of this product. In the short term, these res-trictions led to the appearance of smuggling, and in the long term a movement against the royal monopoly and for the freedom to produce and manufacture tobacco in the Azores, mainly during the second half of the 19th century. This paper aims to study this period of discontent and to understand the strength (or lack) of this opposition.
