Abstract

In recent studies on word-formation, derivatives and compounds are analysed as the result of the application of productive rules. In compounding, the relation between morphology, syntax and semantics is always taken into account, since compounds have an internal syntax, particularly the endocentric compounds, formed by a head and its complement. Some guarda forms that occur in Old Portuguese texts seem to provide (good) indications to trace the history of guarda, going from its occurrence in syntactic constructions until becoming a deverbal name, first element of a nominal compound.
