Abstract
We present the results of a set of studies aiming at identifying the relevant linguistic properties on assessing and training phonemic, intrasyllabic and syllabic awareness abilities. It is shown that age, task and linguistic variables (such as word extension, syllabic structure, stress position, and phonemic properties) must be considered in the construction of phonological awareness tests. The studies reported here fulfill the first milestone of an ongoing project aiming at constructing phonological awareness tools for assessment and intervention with Portuguese preschoolers and primary schooler
