Abstract
Organizations participate in environments that are not only complex, but also replete with ambiguity and contradictory demands. The capacity to work with paradox is necessary to respond to environmental complexity itself. This article discusses how that challenge may be handled. First, it establishes the difference between processes that are often confused because they all involve an element of contradiction, namely dilemmas, paradoxes and dialectics. Then, it discusses different ways/responses to handle paradoxical situations. Finally, it discusses how those ways/responses may result in virtuous versus vicious circles.
