Abstract

This study aimed at evaluating by immunohistochemistry the expression of simple mucin type carbohydrate antigens (Tn, sTn, T) in Barrett's esophagus and associated adenocarcinoma. The series includes surgical (12 pts) and endoscopic biopsy (31 pts) specimens containing columnar-lined mucosa with and without areas of specialized intestinal metaplasia and adenocarcinoma. Both types of metaplastic elements as well as neoplastic cells showed altered simple mucin-type carbohydrate antigens. Alterations of mucin synthesis are associated with the development of neoplasia in Barrett's esophagus, involving columnar cells in addition to goblet non-columnar cells.
