Abstract
In this paper, I survey the textual support for the hypothesis that, within the framework of Kant’s aesthetic theory, the beauty of art is not necessarily of an adherent kind – and hence that it can be of a free kind.
This survey is divided into two parts. In the first part, I list and elaborate on excerpts of the Critique of the Power of Judgment which suggest that artistic beauty is not necessarily of an adherent kind.
In the second part, I present three readings undertaken by interpreters of Kant, two of whom claim that the artistic beautiful might be of a free kind, and the last claims that the beauty of art (that is, the beauty of beautiful art as the art of genius) is free
