O belo e o erótico em 'The Fat Black Woman's Poems', de Grace Nichols

A partir dos poemas do livro The Fat Black Woman’s Poems (1984) de Grace Nichols (1950-) compreende-se uma ressemantização da noção de estética e beleza feminina: a beleza negra e gorda é celebrada, contrapondo-se ao ideal eurocêntrico branco. A mulher negra e gorda é um agente activo nessa asserção e apropriação do conceito de beleza e do feminino. A partir de conceitos de uma historiografia obsoleta, erigida com recurso a noções preconceituosas sobre o corpo feminino negro – como a esteatopigia – o sujeito poético afirma a sua beleza, com recurso à ironia e imagética da Natureza. A “mulher preta e gorda” é a fundadora de uma nova era estética e de celebração do feminino. Neste artigo analiso todas essas referências, considerando uma visão do erótico, da sensualidade e da beleza feminina na poesia contemporânea desta autora nascida na Guiana.


Grace Nichols (1950-), with her poetry book The Fat Black Woman’s Poems (1984), leads the reader towards a comprehension of feminine beauty and aesthetics that includes and celebrates fat and blackness. The “fat black woman” challenges and contradicts the Eurocentric white beauty canon, making a “re-semantization” of that ideology. Considering historiographic concepts that are obsolete and ascertain an aesthetic and social prejudice towards black bodies, especially black women bodies (like steatopygia), the “fat black woman” asserts her beauty, using irony and nature imagery. The “fat black woman” is a founder of a new era of beauty and celebration of the feminine. In this article I examine all these concepts and ideas, taking into consideration a perspective on eroticism, sensuality, and feminine beauty in this work by the Guyanese-born poet.
