Abstract

The link between the implementation of vineyards which produce the various wine grapes in protected geographical regions (the protected geographical indication is used as a description of an agricultural product or foodstuff whose production, processing or preparation takes place within the determined geographical area) and the geological and geographical context has been highlighted by a growing number of authors. In the Arrábida region, where one of the noblest varieties of wine and with the most commercial success - the Muscat (Moscatel) and the occurrence of all producing vineyards established with a GIS system built for the Arrábida World Heritage Nomination file, are evident. There is a large spatial coincidence, particularly with two groups of lithostratigraphic units; the Miocene of the northern slopes of the Louro and S. Francisco mountains and the Upper Jurassic of the southern slopes of the mentioned reliefs, mostly facing south. The total occupied area of both units exceeds 80% which highlights the first units as, in addition to the favourable conditions linked to the terroir, they provide sloped microclimates that allow slower and longer maturation resulting in turn in an increased retention of varietal aromas. It is therefore demonstrated in this work, the relevance to establish Geology and Wine itineraries in a geo-touristical perspective.
