Abstract
O Santuário de Nossa Senhora de Aires (1743-1792), construído nas proximidades da vila de Viana do Alentejo e projectado pelo padre oratoriano João Baptista (1707-1762), apresenta-se como uma peça arquitectónica bastante suis generis, tanto no universo artístico alentejano, como no nacional. Este artigo propõe o questionamento da estética barroca e rococó, atentando, em especial, no Santuário de Aires. A orientação teórica que perpassa o artigo pretende responder, essencialmente, a duas questões: podemos considerar o Rococó um estilo arquitectónico? O Santuário em apreço é ou não uma obra rococó?
The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Aires (1743-1792), built near the village of Viana do Alentejo and designed by the Oratorian priest João Baptista (1707-1762), is a rather sui generis architectural piece, both at the regional and the national level. This article proposes to question the baroque and rococo aesthetics, paying special attention to the sanctuary of Aires. Essentially, we want to answer two questions: Is Rococo an architectural style? Is the sanctuary of Aires a rococo work?
