Abstract
The experience of World War II led to the emergence of cultural movements in favor of a United Europe that came to respond to Win-ston Churchill's political appeal about the need for the United States of Europe. Some 800 prominent personalities from various countries and political areas participated, as well as the most prominent figures in European thought - writers, ecclesiastics, scientists and economists. The Cultural Committee chaired by Salvador Madariaga, and Denis de Rougemont, was fundamental in thinking about Europe, combining unity in diver-sity, overcoming nationalism and creating a spiritual community or a union of cultures.
