Abstract
The foundation of the monastery of S. Dinis and S. Bernard was due to the initiative of King Dinis who, together with the queen consort Isabel, decided to establish in his properties in Odivelas, about 10 km from the city of Lisbon, a Cistercian religious house entrusting it to the feminine branch of the order. The charter of foundation and endowment, with which the sovereign benefited and granted the abbey with properties, lands and privileges, dates back to February 27, 1295. Thou, the study of the coeval archival sources and of the historical context has revealed that the monarch had been meditating for some time on the creation of a monastic house to be instituted in Odivelas, but was able to execute his purpose only when ideal conditions had been reached. This paper proposes a revision of the issue of the origins of the monastery of St. Dinis, taking into account the genesis of the project, its chronology, the choice of place, the provenance and composition of the first community, as well as the various protagonists of the founding process, without the contribution of which probably the monastery could never have seen the light.
