Abstract
This presentation deals with the images that around the Portuguese participation
in World War I were elaborated. And how they are shaped by our way of looking at Portugal’s participation in World War I. Nevertheless, we are not strictly speaking here about historiography and its construction of history, but about what collective memory retains and the image with which it appropriates a given historical reality, the representation it makes of a given historical event.
We will deal subsequently with three temporal moments: the first is born of the way in which our own intervention in the First World War is read by the protagonists of this historical process; the second, in the aftermath and in consequence of the results that the action generated by the interventionists produced in fact and the way in which the society then seeks to read and appropriates it as a collective memory; a third moment, nowadays
and in the contemporary reconstruction of Portugal’s participation in World War I and in the revision and refoundation of its collective memory.
