Abstract
The present Doctoral Thesis emerged of our need to deepen and develop the concept of Creativity, regarding Dance as a formative activity present in the Portuguese Educative System’s Art Education. This study aims to develop the research skills as well as the interpretation and analysis of the scientific production in the area of the Educational Sciences, connecting Creativity, Art Education and Dance. Psychology tools were used as the basis of our investigation starting with its benchmarks and looking towards Creativity allied to Dance Teaching and simultaneously the related investigation was approached. Considering that Creativity is frequently applied in contents as well as in artistic educational contexts we are convinced of the absolute need to understand the personal conceptions and approaches of both Dance teachers and Dance students of the term Creativity, regarding its reflection on the individual, the process, the product and their interaction in Dance. Qualitative investigation was the option chosen to this investigation for it was considered to be the best suited to the inherent problematic of our study. In Phase 1 an inquiry was applied to 12 privileged informants (6 dance teachers and 6 dance students) who allowed focusing in information gathering directly connected to the individual, the process, the product, the creative environment and the evaluation, gauging view points of the participants. Their opinions guided an exploratory study, after the correspondent content analysis and allowed us to move to Phase 2, with a new data collection instrument. In Phase 2 we were searching for the universal social representations of creativity of the sample, based on a quantitative methodology with a survey applied to 281 participants (dance teachers and students) out of a total universe of 356 people invited to participate, corresponding to a response rate of 79%. We consider that the complementarity of both quantitative and qualitative methods applied was relevant for it allowed the in-depth analysis of all the data and the sound interpretation of the studied phenomenon. With the obtained results we wish to offer a significant contribution to the Vocational Dance Courses allowing the effective understanding of the studied educational phenomenon, according to its singularity and complexity thus offering concrete elements on how Creativity is “felt” and “lived” by their students and Dance teachers.
